Taigh Chearsabhagh is a vibrant museum, arts centre and community hub in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, serving an island community and supporting tourism from their idyllic base in Lochmaddy, North Uist.
Pooka & Co are delighted to have had a long association with the centre and its team. We built their first WordPress website in 2011, and have since been invited to design and develop two further versions of their website, the most recent iteration launching in 2021.
The Outer Hebrides is known for its rich heritage, as well as for being a community where the Scottish Gaelic language is spoken widely. Taigh Chearsabhagh is at the forefront of celebrating, exploring and sharing the vibrant culture of the islands and its place in the modern world, taking advantage of digital technologies wherever the opportunity arises.
As well as a wonderful 360 degree virtual tour of the centre and glorious surroundings, a special focus on artwork exhibits, and a fully featured online shop, Taigh Chearsabhagh have a vital need to support the Gaelic language.
Gaelic is prevalent across the Outer Hebrides and the west of Scotland, and Pooka & Co have built multilingual WordPress websites for a number of organisations. In Taigh Chearsabhagh’s case it was particularly important that the website’s online shop could display content and process orders in Gaelic as well as English.
Pooka & Co worked with Taigh Chearsabhagh’s team to create a website in which every element of the site’s content, navigation and functionality could be fully translated. For the multilingual functionality of the site, we configured the Polylang Pro plugin in combination with WooCommerce, the leading ecommerce solution for WordPress, to provide full translation options for the site.
This allows website editors to clone any page, news story, event, menu or product on the website as a starting point to create a Gaelic translation, which can be linked to the original English language version of the content. As a result, users can choose to navigate the site entirely in the Gaelic or English language, or to flip between the two languages as they wish.

As a result of working with Taigh Chearsabhagh, Pooka & Co were able to contribute Gaelic language translations back into the WooCommerce Open Source project, to help WordPress offer translations in multiple languages. WordPress is already translated into 100 different languages, and Pooka & Co are committed to helping where we can to open up access to WordPress to the world.
